Get Uncomfortable to Grow: Stop Letting Excuses Drive Your Path
“Get uncomfortable to grow. ” It’s a phrase I find myself saying often—both to others and as a reminder to myself. The truth is that real growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone. It happens when you push past resistance, take the leap despite fear, and move forward even when the timing isn’t perfect.
Let’s face it—change doesn’t happen when we’re stagnant. And yet, how often do we hesitate, hold back, or completely stall out because we’re worried about what others might think? Or because life is chaotic? Or simply because we’re waiting for the “perfect” time, the “perfect” setup, or the “perfect” version of ourselves?
I know I’ve been there. A perfect example: I’ve been putting off launching my coaching business because my website wasn’t “just right.” I told myself I’d start once it looked professional enough, once every section was polished, once I had the right words and perfect branding. But let’s be honest—those were just excuses.
Were there legitimate life events happening? Absolutely. My husband lost his job. My workplace went through major changes. And then, of course, there were the everyday priorities with kids and family that naturally demanded my time and energy. These are all very real circumstances—but even so, I had to ask myself:
Are these reasons... or are they excuses?
That’s a hard but powerful question. Because underneath all the “valid reasons” was something deeper: fear. Fear of being seen. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of failing before I even really started.
But here’s the truth I’ve come to realize:
There will always be something. Always a reason to wait. Always a justification to play small. Always a challenge that could become your excuse.
But if you want something bad enough—if there’s a dream on your heart or a goal that keeps nudging you—then you have to get uncomfortable. You have to step into the unknown, even if you don’t feel fully ready. Especially then.
So, the next time you feel yourself pulling back, ask:
Am I making a choice out of growth or out of fear?
Is this a true obstacle, or just a convenient excuse?
What’s the worst that could happen if I actually go for it?
Because here’s what I’ve learned: When you stop letting your excuses steer the wheel, you make space for something bigger. Bolder. And far more aligned with who you’re becoming.
So go ahead—do the unthinkable. Be brave. Be bold. Be great.
You just might surprise yourself.
